Alternative Spring Break!!!

What we do: service work dealing with social and
environmental issues
When: Fall, Winter, and Spring Breaks
Where: all over the U.S.

Here are the locations and descriptions that deal with
hunger and homelessness:

FALL BREAK
-Goshen, IN: Participants will be working with La Casa
Goshen. Much of the work will be rehabilitating old houses,
both exterior and interior, for people with low incomes.
Work may include roofing, painting, siding, yard work, and
porch construction. La Casa believes that every family
deserves a chance at a better life. Work will be mostly with
low-income Hispanic families, many of whom are recent
immigrants.
- Detroit, MI: Participants will be working with Focus HOPE,
an organization dedicated to overcoming injustice and
building racial harmony in the city of Detroit. They help
find practical solutions for problems such as hunger,
economic disparity, and inadequate education. The work may
include working with the food program, packaging food to
deliver to the homebound seniors, helping tutor students in
the First Step program, and other porjects that arise.

WINTER BREAK
-Bronx, NY: The group will be working with an organization
in the Bronx called Part of the Solution, POTS. POTS is a
place that serves meals to the homeless population in the
area in their soup kitchen. The group will help prepare the
meals, serve in the soup kitchen, and stock the pantry.
-Bridgeton, NJ: The group will work with the Tri County Head
Start program, one of the largest Head Start program in New
Jersey that serves over 1,000 children and families at 14
centers. The Head Start program offers affordable, full-
year, full-day childcare for infants and children. The
participants will be working in classrooms assisting
teachers with the children. The participants also will be
painting a mural in one of the 14 centers.
-Elm Mott, TX: Participants will work with World Hunger
Relief, Inc., an organization committed to the alleviation
of hunger around the world by providing food-producing
animals and training in their care to rural families around
the world. The work would include tasks such as farming,
gardening, animal care, and light construction on a 42-acre
farm. Some of the animals on the farm include dairy goats,
sheep, chickens, rabbits, and shepherd dogs. Along with
working on the farm, there would be many educational
components to give the group an understanding of the issue
and generate solutions for the problem of world hunger.

Applications can be picked up at the ASB cube in the RSO
complex of the Union. Site-facilitator apps are due Sept. 16
and general participant apps are due Sept. 23. We are also
having another Info Night next Wednesday, Septemeber 21st at
6:30pm in 319 Greg Hall.

Come out and learn more about ASB! =)
