Hello,

I received the following seminar announcement this morning and thought
that perhaps some Common Ground members might have friends in the D.C.
area that would be interested in attending. Please feel free to pass
this along to anyone you think would be interested.

USDA Council on Sustainable Development will be hosting a
"Sustainability
Seminar Series" as a continuation to the seminar series leading up to
the
World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). The first seminar in
this
series will focus on cooperatives.

As October is National Co-op Month, this month's seminar focuses on how
the
cooperative form of collaborative business can promote the producer
adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. Cooperatives are
user-owned businesses through which members can collectively market
products, purchase supplies, or secure services. Producer access to the
cooperative form of collaborative business is a policy choice framed at
the
State Government level in various articles of cooperative incorporation,
and promoted at the Federal level through the Capper-Volstead Act's
grant
of limited antitrust protection, favorable tax treatment, and favorable
eligibility for several federal program benefits, including USDA
research
and technical assistance.

The seminar will be held in Room 107A in the Jamie Whitten Building
(Smithsonian Metro Stop ? Orange/Blue Lines) from 1:00-2:30PM on
Thursday,
October 24, 2002. The seminar will include speakers from the National
Cooperative Business Association, a Local Cooperatives Producer from
Maryland, ACDI/VOCA, and USDA-Rural Business Services.

Please contact either Alan Borst (202-690-2401) or Adela Backiel
(202-720-3921) with questions.
