Reclaim the Streets Lawrence, KS
Last Friday 2-300 people reclaimed Lawrence's busiest downtown street and
had a party. The Party started under a giant Elm tree sitting on private
property slated to become Lawrence's next stripmall. Soon, the Critical
Mass bike parade and a mysterious looking rented truck came to the tree.
Hundreds took to the street eagerly toward the "secret destination."
A few blocks away the rented truck stopped and couches flew out the back.
People quickly formed a couch barricade across Mass. St. People made
another couch barricade at the other end of the block, and effectively
liberated a street lined with corporate retail stores. A banner dropped
over American Eagle Outfitters reading "A new reality is better than a new
product." Sidewalk chalk covered the ground and balloons filled the sky.
People wore face paint and came in costume. People danced, made new
friends, played instruments, did some radical cheers, blew fire, and
enjoyed the feeling of freedom for over three hours.
