Exciting news for CU-SmokeFree Coalition--it is now shaped as it should with
great committee structure and officers! I am pleased to hear and read of this
development.

Congratulations to Scott and congratulations to all who attended and to the
rest of the members who have been so dedicated to putting this group together.

Scott, thanks for your notation about the distinction between the terms
"Smoking ban" and "Smokefree ordinance," [there was an error which ought to be
corrected, when Scott said in his message "As I have mentioned, I have
researched the adoption of these types of ordinances in many cities
throughout the country and I can say for certain that C-U will have a
smoking ordinance (not a "smoking ban" - Thanks, Theo)." Scott you meant a
"smokefree ordinance, " and not a "smoking ordinance."]

Thanks also to Janet (out of the Wilmette media, right Janet?) who pointed
out that they are instructing their journalists to use the term "smokefree
ordiance" as opposed to the term "smoking ban." We would not have known about
without your input--so thanks Janet.

Thanks so much for sharing the good news!

Take good care everyone.

Subject: [C-U Smokefree] Greetings from the President

C-U Smokefree,

Last night marked one of our first organizational milestones. In
addition to welcoming several new members, we approved our by-laws and
elected our slate of officers. The officers are:

Myself as President
Dr. Alan Cohen as Vice-President
Kathleen Gary as Secretary

We have not yet found a Treasurer and nominations (or self-nominations)
are welcome. Feel free to drop me an email if you are interested.=20

We also have formed an Executive Committee, Education Committee,
Fundraising Committee, and a Public Relations Committee. Although not
required, everyone should think about where they might fit in to our
organization and notify us as soon as possible.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, December 4, so mark your calendars
now- we need a good turnout to discuss the strategic goals of our
organization. The minutes from last night will be posted on the website
soon: cu-smokefree.chambana.net =20

I am honored to be elected as President and am excited about the
potential strength of our organization. As I have mentioned, I have
researched the adoption of these types of ordinances in many cities
throughout the country and I can say for certain that C-U will have a
smoking ordinance (not a "smoking ban" - Thanks, Theo).=20

Even at this early stage, the organizational capacity of our group and
the collective skills and experience of our members FAR EXCEEDS that of
any other organization in any other city I am familiar with. But as
stressed by Dr. Tom O'Rourke at last night's meeting, this is still far
from a "slam dunk" and will take the effort and commitment of us all
working together. =20

Thank you again for placing your trust in me as President. Together,
we'll see "C-U Smokefree!!"

Scott

Dr. Theo Tsoukalas pointed out in his recent email about media coverage in
Wilmette. As the primary media contact and one who develops all the media
materials in this neck of the woods, I wanted to make this clear - we do not
use
the term ban. I have told reporters this and verbally and explained why this
is
an incorrect characterization to no avail. So please do not suggest that we
have not been doing it right. You will not change the media on this.
Janet
