Hi all--
I just came back from a long afternoon and evening at the Annual COnfernece
of the American Public Health Associaiton here in San Francisco and found this
message in my e-mail box from Joe Cherner.
I wanted to pint out two points of interest: (1) the prossible of the term
"smoking ban" by Wilmette Viallage President Nancy Canafax. We should ensure
that local Champaign Urbana city councilors do not embrace this term in their
deliberations--some foor work will be required to help them understand that this
is not a prohibition issue, which is what the term "smoking ban" implies.
This is a health issue about eliminating a deadly source of toxic exposure,
namely "secondhand smoke."
(2) The health and welfare of the bar and restaurant workers should be at the
center of efforts to pass a smoke free ordinance in the Champaign Urbana
area, in order to protect these workers from the deadly consequences of secondhand
smoke exposure. And, also, to protect the very customers these workers serve.
Take care,
Theo
