Hi All--

thanks Scott for sharing the nice suggestions and ideas. It would be very
important as Scott has understood and I am sure all of us as well, to understand
the significance of local smoking prevalence rates and the fact that CU's is
th elowest in the state is giving us enormous advantage to educate the
community about the disparity between that smoking prevalance statistic and the
painful realization of the lack of a comparable percetnage of smokefree restaurants
and bars. I would likke to share more on this later.

My BIO follows (sorry it's long) [Scott please free to edit accrdingly]:

Theodore (Theo) H. Tsoukalas, Ph.D.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
October 2003

Theo Tsoukalas holds a doctorate degree in sociology from the University of
Illinois-Urbana. His graduate study includes training in rural sociology,
environmental sociology, demography, public policy, social conflict, social
inequality, industrial labor relations, medical/health sociology, social movements,
science studies, urban sociology, and international development. Dr.
Tsoukalas has published on a wide range of subjects including diffusion of
innovations, organizational deviance, environmental pollution control, lead poisoning
research policy, environmental health, institutional failure, and tobacco control
advocacy and policy evaluation.

In November 2002, Dr. Tsoukalas completed a three-year post-doctoral
fellowship in health policy research at the prestigious Institute for Health Policy
Studies (IHPS) at the School of Medicine, University of California-San
Francisco, where he also served as a member of the academic staff of the School of
Medicine. In his capacity as a post-doctoral fellow, Dr. Tsoukalas became
involved firsthand with the planning and execution of multifaceted, multiyear field
research in tobacco control policy, and he served on the Fellowship Committee
at IHPS as a representative of the fellows. As a fellow, he attended numerous
postdoctoral seminars on topics such as the history and culture of U.S. health
policy, bio-terrorism and emergency preparedness, disparities in health care
access and quality, and the ethics of health policy research. Finally, as
part of his duties related to field research data collection on tobacco control
policy, he drafted and monitored related budgets, and trained, managed, and
evaluated field research personnel.

Although Dr. Tsoukalas lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area, he
considers the Champaign-Urbana area his home. He passionately follows Champaign
County politics, Champaign-Urbana health and social service movements as well
as local health issues (e.g. access to health care, mental health, tobacco
control, alcohol control, domestic violence, and women’s public safety).

Cheers,

Theo
