Georgetown, KY will be going smoke free October. 1 (see article below).
This is the second municipality in the heart of tobacco country to pass
a strong law regulating smoking in public places.
These developments bring several things to mind:
1. Kentucky has the highest smoking prevalence rate in the country
at 30.8%.
2. Tobacco is an integral part of the economy in KY including not
just sales, but also farming & extensive manufacturing.
3. If KY municipalities can pass strong local ordinances regulating
smoking in public places, it can be done ANYWHERE. And certainly an
area like Champaign-Urbana, where the prevalence rate is only 16-17%,
the lowest in Illinois, (and one of the lowest in the entire country) a
strong smoke-free law should be a "given", better known as a
"no-brainer"!

Georgetown, Kentucky will be completely smokefree on October 1. This
ordinance passed Thursday after years of great work by local advocates.
It is comprehensive, covering all workplaces including restaurants and
bars.
