[C-U Smokefree] Proposed smoking ban fails in Champaign

Well, i think we were seeing some deception and special-interest
favoring on the part of certain council members. Pirok was definitely
not above board, his justifications did not match his shifting
position, probably has some ties or support from bar owners. Dodds
definitely has an interest in specific outcomes on the downtown scene.
she triple checked the total ban would cover indoors only... of
course because she is tied to a number of venues with extensive
outdoor seating that would benefit... however a restaurant ban might
impact their burgeoning restaurant biz... overall i think we were
seeing disingenuous positioning. They were pretending to be
sympathetic to the issue, but if they really wanted to do something,
they could certainly find a workable option. They wanted it to fail.
Double the size of that crowd and councilmembers will have to pay
attension. It will happen.

This has never been my issue, I just joined this list after that
meeting because I was VERY disappointed in the lack of sincerity
coming from some in city council (speeches aside) and I will make sure
many people hear about this. I was more satisfied with the response of
some of the more conservative members like Vic, at least he was being
honest. I expect this kind of behavior from federal-level politicians,
but I guess it happens everywhere.
