Here's one of the saddest - and best - testimonials for doing what we
do.

It was sent to all of the members of Champaign council.

Thanks to one and all for everything that you do to make this
possibility real.

CU Smokefree!

Subject: Smokefree Champaign Ordinance

I am a Mother of three young children having lived in Champaign-Urbana
my whole life. I am so pleased that this vote is a real possibility in
being in favor of children's health and parents who want to see their
children grow in a safer town. My father passed away 6 years ago from
lung cancer. He was a well liked and respected bar owner in Urbana. He
smoked as well as breathed second hand smoke for 21 years. Ironically,
once he sold his business he quit smoking so that my Mother would not
have to breathe in the smoke day in and out. The Cancer was in
existance way before he quit and he succumb to it to our great sadness.
Having needed to say something about my Dad, I feel passionate about
this subject.

I get the perspective of the business owners, I understand depending on
customers for a living. I find that smoking in public is no different
than driving while drinking. Its reckless, it endangers the life of
others. Its no sure thing that you are giving everyone around you lung
disease, just the same its no guarantee that you will get into your car
and slam into me or my kids just for your selfish personal satisfaction.
In this day and age with healthcare cost being out of control, lets
start with the obvious and take the self gratifying smoking that does
effect the rest of us who have to smoke right along with you. If
Champaign-Urbana goes smoke free - thats a pretty bold statement that
this progressive community cares - I would love to see smokers be in the
minority, not because government dictates it but that people learn from
the example the City Council can represent in the clear health
advantages to cleaner air. Thank you for caring about the citizens of
this community.
