[C-U Smokefree] My first smokefree visit to The Iron Post

greetings fellow clean air and music lovers, i was not at the Oberon show on thursday but i did see both shows on friday night at the post. the happy hour jazz sets were packed but perhaps the threat of an ice storm later kept people from filling up the venue for a great latin jazz combo. thanks to dan for promoting the post and the excellent live music and food it offers. the post has done more for music and local musicians in this town than any club since it opened. now that it's smokefree it is an absolute treasure for our community.

precisely because he operates primarily as a community-oriented live music venue, the owner does not have the deep pockets of certain champaign entertainment dynasties. to stay in business the owner also assumes the duties every night of sole cook (in a very cramped kitchen), soundman, talent booker, barback, manager, opener and closer, etc. and yet the food and service even on crowded nights is still equal or better than most clubs. (it is understandable that he would get caught off-guard by such a big crowd on a thursday night of winter break.)

i hope everyone who enjoys music will get out to see more shows there, even when it's a little cold and nasty outside, when the couch and dvd player beckon. it definitely validates the smoking ban, supports local music, and makes us a more happening little city.

Thanks,
gordon kay
