I couldn't agree w/you more! The woman who spoke to the Council, promising to boycott any bars that did go back to smoking, even for only 7 months, had the right idea! Let's get our supporters to know who is doing the stupid/dangerous/backward-thinking thing, and vote w/our $$$!

Subject: [C-U Smokefree] The public information that Champaign forgot

As a public service to the non-smokers of Champaign and its environs, I am taking the liberty of informing you regarding the Class A and Class C licensees that MAY allow smoking in Champaign, although many will remain smokefree, including Jupiter's, Cowboy Monkey, the Highdive, Billy Barooz, Boltini's and others. If anyone knows for certain about particular other Class A or Class C establishments that will remain 100% smokefree, please let me or Dan Lewart know, and we'll attempt to keep an updated list of smokefree bars posted on the website.

As soon as we can sort through the morass that Champaign created, we will post this list of the Class A licensees that have REMAINED SMOKEFREE. Remember that the brilliant lawmakers of Champaign enacted their partial repeal with no requirements for signage or other public information so that customers can know which establishments are required to be 100% smokefree and which are not (and which will remain smokefree voluntarily). Not only that, but 'bars' without Class A licenses that are part of restaurants (ie: Fridays, Lone Star, etc) are still required to be 100% smokefree, something that many Champaign residents and visitors may not fully understand.

Moreover, although we have held off on this particular strategy, I can now recommend a PERMANENT BOYCOTT of establishments that choose to allow smoking - yes, even after 1-1-2008, when they will (hopefully) be required to be smokefree. By their actions, these places such decided to shun the patronage of non-smokers and show their disdain for their own patrons to (in their own perception) make a few extra bucks.

  Scott
