I share your dream.  If the devices were cheap enough, you could
suction-cup them to four or more upstairs windows.  They could connect
using in-house powerline, CATV, phoneline, or Cat-5.  The routing will
"just work."  Also, if you have a sectorized arrangement on a tall tower,
and a separate router is dedicated to each segment, then you only need
an ethernet hub/switch to tie the sectors together.

Tying together routers with an in-building copper network may be the
best way to connect points on all sides of some Champaign-Urbana
office buildings.  It has the performance benefits you mention.
Sometimes it will be an advantage that you only need the cooperation
of the officeworkers, not the building management, to get the nodes in
place---building management may want to charge you for roof access.
