Mike's idea to develop a blueprint for mesh networking implementation on a
large scale--including a realistic budget for equipment and maintenance--is
excellent.
This is pretty much a blank canvas, since no one has ever deployed a network
of the size and density proposed in Philly. It's a great opportunity to
demonstrate the knowledge base and experience present in the CWN world.
Is anyone game to form a moonlight working group on this project?

Do other people see this number as being a little, um... low?
Just for the technical infrastructure to run a 135 square mile network,
$1.5 million/year? Supporting millions of subscribers?
I just don't quite see how it can be done, but I'm by no means an
expert in large scale wireless (who is?). Is there any entity that
supports this kind of subscriber base, this geography, and a brand new
technology for anywhere close to that - and without a revenue stream?
I know that wireless is cheaper, but is it really going to be that much
cheaper to run it, just because it's cheaper to implement it?
My guess - Tropos and other wireless equipment companies are feeding
them these numbers.
I hope they succeed, just so the opponents and incumbents don't have a
massive failure to point to. But I hope they're also being realistic
and aren't being taken for a ride.

I'm not sure if I'm in the minority or not with my opinions, but I will
propose the following:
If, in fact, logical analysis of the Philly project points to the
conclusion that numbers are optimistic and there are things being
overlooked, this is a key opportunity for us as the CWNs to create a
well-reasoned paper that brings any oversights to light.
It could be a way for us to show that our collective experiences and
voice may be worth more than a good marketing study by a wireless
equipment manufacturer any day of the week...
Mike
