[CWN-Summit] Re: CWN-Summit Digest, Vol 34, Issue 7

Not sure what Bob is really looking for, and I agree with Wolfgang that
probably it's just about having a snmp enabled devices and configured
for collecting the appropriate data and then simply collect it on a
nagios or cacti system anywhere where it has connectivity.

However we do use another approach for doing so, which might be a bit
more complex during the setup, but is quite more effective for large
scale deployments anywhere (de-centralized), for self-organized networks
with no administrators and quite flexible in terms of devices monitored.
Is based on having a central server somewhere acting as a self service
provisioning system (assigning IP's, configurations, etc) and then, by
setting a graph server on a linux box and a few packages on the field,
that system will collect and store locally information on traffic for
all snmp-enabled devices, and by doing pings will take statistics of
latency responses and lost packets, which is not like the rssi levels,
but helpful enough to monitor the link quality and availability. The
server then ensemble the data of any node in a web page with all the
information at the database, and the graphs coming from that server
placer anywhere. That is what enabled our network to scale up to
thousands of monitored devices without collapsing servers and still
manage the network without increase admin tasks in the same proportion.

For instance, if you go to the web page:
http://guifi.net/cepa
You will see a node with lots of linked nodes and real time and historic
information of each one. Note that the graphs are coming from a distinct
server although you see all in the same web page.

If you wish, our server can also be used for hosting your network
information, regardless of where is located, and you just have to setup
the local servers on the field.
