Hi Saverio,

thank you for sharing your thoughts about this issue. Let me try to get some things right here before there will be more misunderstandings.

First of all everyone is welcome to join IS4CWN. And of course neither NAF/OTI nor freifunk are organizing this event for profit. You should not doubt this at all.

Compared to other events we have done at c-base the summit will be much bigger and international. It requires a lot more planning and logistics, so that an early registration of participants is a prerequisite to help us make it a good event for everyone.

The enterence fee is mainly to cover food and some social events as we want to put most of the funded money into travelling bursaries for people from other countries an continents.

If someone can not afford the fee, then they should just let us know and we will try to find a solution for this on an individual basis.

We are also just recently working on a general discount for community members.

So please do not be unfair. We are trying our best to make everyone happy. I would really appreciate if you and other people from NINUX were joining this international event. Just let us know who needs support.

Greets,

JuergeN

Hello all,
please forward my email to the proper people, and proper mailing lists.
there is a big talking in the past 3 weeks about the wireless summit at the
C-Base in the beginning of October.
the big talking is about the ticket for entering at the event, that shocked
most of the foreigners that attended previous events at C-Base.
I have been around the C-Base for several years now, and I attended many
wireless events. In all of them we had meals, and all the people were
really participating. People doing videos, streaming, doing talks. People
freely donated money when arriving, to make everything possible. The recent
Wireless Community Weekend 2013 is a perfect example of that.
In my opinion an event where you have to pay a ticket to get inside is not
representative of this community.
Anyone should be able to get in without paying the ticket and see what we
have to say.
I have a good job and I can afford both travelling and entrance ticket. But
how I can invite a lot of young students, if we put such barriers ? I dont
feel comfortable inviting young people. Wireless community is not a job for
them , is something they do as activists.
What are these EU projects sponsoring if we need to make people pay a
ticket to get in ? What are the sponsors for ?
And morover, event the CCC congress and camping have cheaper tickets !
Because of this, my idea at the moment is NOT to participate. I will be at
the C-Base again for wireless community weekend 2014.
Wireless community is grassroots, it is NOT business. I have the feeling
that the New America Foundation has a "business approach" that does not
match well with the European way of developing wireless community networks.
ciao,
Saverio - http://Ninux.org Ninux.org

Hi Roger (et al.),
Since 2004, the Summit has never turned away anyone for inability to pay -- this
has always been a hallmark of the International Summit for Community Wireless
Networks. We do, of course, welcome volunteers and other barter arrangements,
but don't turn people away who would be unable to afford the registration costs.
Registration includes breakfast and lunch on each of the main Summit days and
we also try to do 1-2 social evenings where we cover as much of those costs as
well.

organisers, I suggest that you consider (again[*]) the option of offering an
alternative for those who cannot afford the ticket letting the to "pay" with
work. There are many activities where these "volunteers" can help: video
streaming, attending the chat, being at the registry desk, etc. AFAIK this is
quite common in CNs' events and from our ( http://guifi.net guifi.net

that usually the work done by them is much worth than the cost of the fee they
save (and they know that, but it is ok for them because there are other things

this time to formalise it making a public announcement. Regards. On 06/18/2013
