[Gas] dbmanager without gas question

i'm working on some data import scripts which use
a DBManager object but are called from the command
line where there is no Gas object.  DBManager has
a bunch of debug code that depends on there being
a Gas object handy.  I wonder if this is new, and
the DBManager without Gas stuff used to work, and
no longer does because of the debug stuff.

any suggestions about how i can continue to use
a DBManager without a Gas object?
