David Rosenboom is a composer, performer, conductor, intedisciplinary
artist. author and educator. He has since 1990 been the Dean of the
School of Music at California Institute of the Arts, where he has also
been Conductor of the New Century Players and Co-Director of the Center
for Experiments in Art, Information and Technology. A pioneer in
American experimental music, he has in his work explored ideas about the
spontaneous evolution of forms, languages for improvisation,
cross-cultural collaboration, and many other issues in new music since
the 1960s.
We gratefully acknowledge the many hours of renovation and documentation
by Gregory Danner, assisted by Dac Crowell.
"The Sal Mar Construction was a breakthrough in musical thought, an
idea so novel, so new, and so important, that it will remain a milestone
in the history of music."
Joel Chadabe, Director
Electronic Music Foundation
"Salvatore Martirano's compositional mind was immense. His vast
compositional world became embodied in realizations that ranged from
instrumental and vocal music to computer music, live electronic music,
and multi-media. The Sal Mar Construction is one of the monumental
masterworks of live electronic music, in which an individual's
compositional system is embodied in digital logic and analog dynamics.
These are real-time, compositional algorithms made manifest in
intelligent, electronic networks, wherein the performer/composer injects
ideas of musical organization as his acts of performance, a unique
landmark in live, electronic music."
David Rosenboom, Dean, School of Music,
California Institute of the Arts
