[Imc-events] x-Guided By Voices, x-Music Editor - together?

URSIS booking booking at ursis.com
Tue Apr 16 00:39:53 CDT 2002

The only place in town that you can catch a member of Guided By Voices and
an Acting Music Editor for the Octopus on one stage is the Independent Media
Center in Urbana. There is absolutely only one place to be on Wednesday.

Every time there is something special going on I sit down and try to think
of all the people in town and then I email them. I don't have a list or
anything, I just sit and think as hard as I can, and I never come up with
all the same people.

Wednesday, April 17th @ IMC, 8pm-midnight
Swearing At Motorists, Edward Burch, the Blackouts, Musico
Tix: $6 at the door only Doors: 7pm Show: 8pm sharp
There's a Piccadilly just down the street, the Office is right next door,
and a bank is across the way.

-- SWEARING AT MOTORISTS --
Lo-fi pop duo Swearing at Motorists teamed singer/guitarist Dave Doughman
and drummer Don Thrasher, the latter a member of heroes Guided by Voices at
their Bee Thousand-era peak. This is one of the most underrated bands every
person should experience. The duo just wrapped up a tour with
hot-band-of-the-moment My Morning Jacket, in support of the split release
the bands are doing with uber-indie Jade Tree records. Chad Bidwell of
INK19 reports: Swearing At Motorists, to the casual listener, has brought
such exclamations as "By god, this is twee stoner rock!" and "Doesn't Don
Thrasher have the most ridiculous name?". My experience with SAM is marked
by the paradox that I cannot tell you any songs I especially like or remark
on any that stand out, but I know each one by heart and sing along
effortlessly after only a few listens.

-- EDWARD BURCH --
Wednesday night's bill will also feature a solo performance by Edward Burch,
who will be releasing a new album later this month with two-time Grammy
nominee and former Wilco member Jay Bennett. According to the duo's
internet-based website: Despite his busy schedule with Bennett, Burch still
works with three additional musical projects: The Kennett Brothers (a
Chicago-based alt.country ensemble), The Viper & His Famous Orchestra (a
Slim Gaillard-inspired jazz quartet on All Wrote Records), and a duo with
Wilco keyboardist, LeRoy Bach. Burch also lends his talents on occasion
performing with the acclaimed gothic country duo, The Handsome Family. Brett
Sparks (of The Handsome Family) has commented publicly of Burch, "Man, if I
could sing like Edward, I'd be a millionaire."

-- THE BLACKOUTS --
Local rock-icons the Blackouts will also be performing, having recently
exchanged Johns - Firebird Band bassist Isberg has departed and is being
temporarily replaced by The Beauty Shop's front man Hoeffleur. After
listening to the infectious mod-punk classico tunes of the Blackouts, step
up and congratulate Hoeffleur on his recent deal with Scottish label Spit
and Polish, the imprint of Teenage Fanclub's Francis Macdonald.

-- MUSICO --
Omaha, Nebraska's Musico open the show. When the band members first
contacted the IMC they assured me I'd never heard anyone like them. After
hearing about the show, they remarked that they have a similar sound to
Swearing At Motorists and were added to the bill. Who knows what you'll
hear.

Please come out to the IMC on Wednesday and witness one of the most
astounding lineups of recent memory. Pass this email along to anyone who
may be interested. Indie rock doesn't get much closer than this. Someone
mentioned that there may be another show going on in town that night, but
I'm not sure what they were talking about.

[upcoming: Mecca Normal, Dub Narcotic Sound System, The Stardeath, The
Naysayer (Tara Jane O'Neil/x-Retsin), Urban Legends, Volta Do Mar]

While I don't have a mailing list, I think Jenny does so if you'd like to be
informed of all the hip shows we're doing at the IMC send her a note -
jenny at ucimc.org. That way you won't be a total sucker and miss awesome
bands like the IMC hosted this weekend - The Poster Children and Early Day
Miners. I just do this sloppy impromptu stuff.
