American Roots Music/Alt.Country

For 10 years, Trailer Bride (Bloodshot Records) have crafted country
noir (alt-country) from their homebase near Chapel Hill, NC. They
return to Champaign-Urbana once again, after several past visits. I
remember when Trailer Bride's album Smelling Salt came out while I was
a morning menu airshifter at WEFT. People were constantly requesting
songs from that album, almost every week. Trailer Bride is my favorite
all time roots music band. Electric, gritty, high, lonesome,
footstomping, bring-a-smile-to-your-face, romping good time music.

Rex Hobart & His Misery Boys (Bloodshot Records) from Kansas City
serve up some old-school honky tonk that goes down easy and drives the
blues away. Tractor Kings, local favorites on Mud Records, open up
the evening with reverb-soaked alt-country meets Bob Dylan.

Sunday, March 23, 2003, 7:00 PM
Charlie King and Karen Brandow with Kevin Elliott
Tickets: $10-$15 sliding scale
Radical Political Folk Music

Charlie and Karen are favorites at the IMC. In a tradition that goes
back to Woody Guthrie (and earlier), they sing union songs, anti-war
songs, feminist songs, immigrant songs. They sing organizing songs and
protest songs. They sing songs to set us free. If you want to stop war
and stuff you've got to sing loud and that's what Charlie King has
been doing for 35 years. His songs have been recorded by Pete Seeger,
Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, Arlo Guthrie, and others.

Kevin Elliott hosts From the Joshua Tree Inn (featuring folk,
bluegrass, alt.country, blues, and everything in between) on WEFT 90.1
FM every Tuesday night at 8pm. He also writes and sings folk songs and
has recently teamed up with a fiddle player who will be joining him
for Sunday's show.
