* Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service to kick off*
*King's School Art Drive *
 [image: AmericorpsArtDrive.jpg]

January 14th, 2009 (Urbana, IL) – This year on Martin Luther King, Jr Day
the local AmeriCorps program at the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media
Center is launching an art supply drive for the Martin Luther King Jr.
Elemtary School's art program in Urbana. The art drive will kick off on
January 19th and run for several weeks with drop off locations throughout
the Urbana-Champaign community. January 19th, 2010 is celebrated as the
AmeriCorps National Day of Service which is happening all across the
country.

We ask that those in the community who support art education consider
donating art supplies in the following weeks. Items that we encourage are:
construction paper, pencils, safety scissors, crayons, markers, glue sticks,
colored pencils, and colored printer paper. All safe, children-friendly
materials are welcome!

On the AmeriCorps National Day of Service the local UCIMC AmeriCorps branch
will host a day of instrument-building at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary
School to kick off the drive. In the following weeks, AmeriCorps members
will work in conjunction with Cara Maurizi's, music teacher at King School
to form a Peace Band, and teach the students the importance of peace and
non-violence; a critical principle in the work of Dr. King. Students at
King School will build instruments, learn songs about peace, and give a
performance as a combined Peace Band in February as part of Black History
Month.

Beginning January 19, 2009, everyone can donate supplies by dropping them in
one of the many collection bins at the following locations:

[image: RebeccaNagleNew.jpg]A Dozen Things I want to do on stage is a new
one-woman cabaret by Rebecca Nagle. Of the dozen, Nagle will undress to
"Wenn Ich Mir Was Wünschen Dürfte", fit in a small box, tell your secrets,
discuss why something is racist, fall in love, read her fantasies, act out
your fantasies, induce a tragedy, fall down, take truth serum while letting
the audience ask her questions, tell a tall tale, and disembowel herself.

*"Clowning and Caring" in Quito, Ecuador *

The School for Designing a Society and the Gesundheit! Institute
brought 20 students from 8 countries to Quito, Ecuador, on an 8-day
"Clowning and Caring" trip. Participants dressed their desires for a
different society in colorful clothes and "changed the subject" of grave
situations. Here we see Patch Adams leading a parade of health care
professionals in the World's Largest Pair of Underwear. Jacob Barton is
pictured on the floor, in the leprechaun hat.
