Hello,

My name's Brady Salz, and I'm the Workshops Director for the next year for
IEEE student body at UIUC. I've been subscribing to your mailing list for
quire some time, and I've dropped by the Makerspace once or twice, and it's
been a great time. I'm emailing you guys today with a request to have some
more involvement between the students and the community next year, starting
in the fall.

I'm a strong believer in the hacker/maker mentality, and I've found many
people who also share these interests as well. Unfortunately, the ECE
curriculum here doesn't really present itself in a way to capitalize on
that desire often. Through my workshops, many, many people are finally
given the chance to learn one of the most basic skills in electronics:
soldering! While that is only the beginning, I feel it is an accurate
representation of the large gap in skills taught here.

While this whole philosophy of workshops is nothing new here, I still feel
that it remains remarkably isolated from the community. Like I said, I
believe in Making, and that is truly a community art. What I'm trying to
say, in a very roundabout way, is that I sincerely hope that we could
collaborate quite a bit over the course of the next year! I'm not quite
sure why I'm sending this email so early, since I'll be away all summer
(interning with IBM, woohoo), but I really just wanted to get the idea out.

Thanks
Brady
