Hi guys,
I saw you needed a robot built. I built a pretty cool 8 foot tall metal
robot puppet for a short film I directed last year and have been working
on similar style props for another short.
You can check out the one I built at http://1972movie.com and in action
a little bit in the trailer. The full short isn't online yet as we're
still doing a few festivals. More robot shots are in my friend's VFX
reel - he helped out a bit with some compositing http://vimeo.com/31827508.
I am in Champaign but my wife and I are about to move into a new house
so my schedule will be touch and go for the next month. What is your
timeframe for the project, and what is your (super rough) robot budget?
Also, how large a robot are you looking for? Roughly human sized? I
also built this robot for a short:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtgYVuQocm8 but I don't have him in town
and he is more of a joke stylistically and pretty hard to move.
I'm really interested in helping out with this because our visual styles
(for cool robots) seem to be fairly compatible and I'm working on a
sequel and could definitely benefit from more robots if you wouldn't
mind sharing. I could also possibly build another head for my existing
1972 robot and rent him to you, but he is pretty beat up, both
intentionally (fake rust) and from the stress of filming - I don't know
if that would fit your story. I would also be happy to rent you the
older robot too or instead, but I'd want to talk to you on the phone and
explain all of his nuances ahead of time.
Anyway, let me know if you have any questions, thanks, and good luck
with prepro.

Hi,
There has been no interest expressed from the MakerSpace in doing
this, yet.
Might this be an opportunity for MakerSpace-CMM collaboration?
We can provide space and tools in exchange for ideas and motivation
to make.
Thanks,

Makerspace,
My name is Andrew Quinn. I am the Production Designer for /Yellow
Springs/ a Sci-Fi short film set in a future where people have
become addicted to living out another live by way of a virtual
reality. The film centers around "Number 11" a young girl who awakes
from living out an 80 year old man's life. Upon returning to the
"real world" she is greeted by Smokey, a robot who tends to the
people plugged into the virtual world. This film will be made in
the style of a drug film like Transpotting or Requiem for a Dream.
We are in need of a somewhat functional robot to play the part of
Smokey. The robot is still in the development stage but we have a
few idea of what he should look like. Think of 50's tin toy robots;
very boxy, crude, metal, dirty, lots of knobs and blinking lights.
Attached is a good reference photo.
The robot needs to be able to move its arms up and down and put a
cigarette to its mouth. We were thinking it could roll around VIA a
remote controlled car. He should also be able to turn his head like
a human. One idea we liked, was using a oscilloscope as his mouth.
Again, the robot is in a film so it doesn't have to function
mechanically, it could be operated like a puppet or by a man inside,
if this keeps the cost low.
Is this something your hackerspace would be interested in creating.
If so, how much do you think it would cost? I would like to work
closely with you on the look of the robot, but the functionality is
what I really need help with. I am located in Muncie, Indiana so I
might not be able to work with you in person, but would be
very available via phone call or Skype. Once the robot is completed
I would drive to pick the robot up.
Thanks for any help you can provide, I look forward to hearing from
you soon.
