Models of open-source manufacturing: Waffle iron with removable plates,
Mattel Creepy Crawlers, Vac-U-Form

And fun, too!
Waffle iron is physically equivalent to injection-casting expanding
urethane foam, but for the endothermic/exothermic curing/cooking process.
Is the SoliDoodle big enough to build waffle iron plates? (Missing step is
casting the plate pattern from the SoliDoodle into metal.)
Build a mold pattern on the SoliDoodle, then transfer it to oven clay for
Pewter casting. I see no reason that Creepy Crawler molds can't be made
out of Pewter.
Is Pewter high-temperature enough to use in a waffle iron? (Too much lead
for contact with food? In the 21st Century? -- It was certainly considered
OK for the 18th C.)
Again, patterns built with a SoliDoodle are ready-made for the Vac-U-Form
-- It was actually the original application for 3D printing.
(Well, the industrial-sized vacuum former...)
Build rate on the SoliDoodle is approx. 1 vertical inch/hour. Reproduce
the parts in a few minutes in Creepy Crawlers or Vac-U-Form.
Cheers,
-Stewart
