Greetings, Everyone.

Over the past 14 weeks, The Community Saturday School, a community literacy
and arts program, created a multigenerational family of learners that
included grandmothers, mothers, fathers, children, grad students, high
school students, and community partners. We've read, listened, discussed,
reflected, learned, laughed, ate, and loved. New social networks were
formed and families were strengthened. We were introduced to mindfulness,
Capoiera, West African dance, and yoga. We traveled to Springfield, where
we were treated to a presentation from "Harriet Tubman," toured the museum,
and shared a meal at the Golden Corral. This past Saturday, we were able to
share the knowledge we produced over the course of the program with close
to 20 practitioners from four school districts who attended our
professional development day. Our guests were anxious to return to their
home schools to implement what they learned from our guest speaker, Dr.
Sundiata Cha-Jua, as well as the instructors, parents, instructors, and
facilitators of The Community Saturday School. All of these things are
truly something to celebrate.

So come out to the U-C IMC on Sunday, May 4 from 3-5 p.m. to share in our
joyous celebration where our amazing young artists will showcase their
talents. There will be poetry by Collette "Coco" Harmon and presentations
from her creative writing students, photography displays by Nailah Davis
and her students, art showings by Naomi Johnson and her students, Guinean
drumming by Andy Miller and his group of young drummers, as well as special
performances and showings. There will be a ceremony in which youth and
mothers will be receive books and other items. We'll also be discussing
plans for expanding The Community Saturday School into a year round program.

And since everything always goes better with food, please bring something
to share: a dish, fruits, veggies, and/or beverages to share. We look
forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Best,
Dr./Mama Amira
