News Group
8/26/01

Attending: Dan Chambers, Sascha Meinrath, Paul Kotheimer, Nancy
Dietrick-Rybicki, Nick Bervelier, Mark Enslin (facilitating), Meridith
Kruse, Danielle Chynoweth, Brent MacDonald.

News Upates:
in progress...
* Illinois Renewable Energy Fair: Nancy went and will prepare a 10-minute
focus for Monday's Newshour.
* Guatemala: Meridith was in Guatemala over the summer. Peace accords,
observers. Could do a story/update on it and tie it in with Colombia.
Andean initiative coming up (more military $ to Colombia, Peru ,Ecuador).
Will Durbin support it? Could write that up. Will write up a headline
for Mark E. (enslin at uiuc.edu) about something related to central/south
america.
* CARE3: Mark E. has audio from the C-U days where people described their
experience with the Champaign schools. Also have a little video. (SM
thinks the champ. schools video coud be the most important thing the IMC
has worked on.)
* Bernardin Amendment for universal health care (all speeches, some nice,
inspiring things from Granny D., Quentin Young, Pat Quinn, Gene
Vanderport, Jim Holiman, a nurse). Danielle has it and is thinking about
archiving it.
* Queer beat/Youth liberation beat. Danielle has been thinking about it.
Would like someone under 18 to work on it; did a RadioGirl on it; has some
resources.
* Trial of 85% coalition. Danielle will cover it; will have headline for
tomorrow's Newshour.
* How major music labels have affected local music scene. Brent is
working on it and would like input.
* Tim Johnson's Town Hall Meeting at Parkland. Campaign Finance Reform
(public citizen)/Clean Air (PIRG?). 6 p.m. Wednesday, Parkland. Peter
will probably attend with others to address Fast Track.
* Honor the Chief campaign. Dan is intrigued by it and will try to cover
it. Dan will write a headline for Mondy's newshuor.
* Family Community Activity Center/Champaign Schools--Sascha. Would like
to see us focus on racial community discrimination issues. Create stories
that build a coalition. Show links between champaign schools, UIUC,
police, etc. Request for right of referral--Racial Justice Now (John Lee
Johnson's group) was denied the request to have input on the settlement.
Some people will be trying to write up a headline for tomorrow.
* Urbana School Board-request for re-districting allow for pubilc input.
Cope will be among those requesting access to the process. Tues, Sep. 4,
7:30 at Urbana School Board. Please no reporting before Sep. 4.
Black man in Champaign Co. jail for 1 year without charges. Meg Miner
heard about it. She needs someone to hold her hand to follow-up. Paul K.
will email Meg and ask her what she needs.

8/10 "Newshour": Cope's doing it on her family's trip to Israel. Applied
for the spot on her own, so it's not necessarily an "IMC Newhour" but
would be willing to have IMC headlines.

WEFT Proposal: After 8/10, the IMC Newshour ends, unless we hear from the
Programming Committee that they've approved the IMC's proposal for a
weekly newshour. The PC may be looking for a place to put us. We may not
have a regular slot until October/November. We're currently looking for a
new name for the newshour. A couple people have expressed the opinion
that "IMC Newshour" should remain.

Minidisc Archive. Paul K has a shoebox nearly full of minidiscs that
comprise the archive. Ellen K has compiled a database for the same.
Would like for people to use the archive. A call for minidisc shelving
has gone out. For archive purposes, please add the following to your
minidiscs: A LABEL with the DATE, EVENT, TITLE, WHO RECORDED IT, CONTENT
NOTES (the more complete, the better). An excel spreadsheet on the staff
computer is available. We currently have no checkout system. For the
sake of smooth production, please do these things. Archive is located in
the production room.

Finally,
FSRN is begging us to send them stuff! Headlines, produced pieces, etc.
(Headlines are voiced by their authors.) What do we need? How to convert
a wav vile to an mp3 and post it to the website. Danielle will finish it
off.

end. 2:55
