This is a brief report of the last two news working group meetings and an
appeal for people to pitch in.

meeting 6/10/01

Attending: Mark Enslin, Sehvilla Mann, Omar Ricks, Pauline Bartolone,
Mollie Stentz, Avram Golden-Trist

I passed on a request from Paul Riismandel that people not be shy about
posting stories to the website.

Discussed the schedule for the IMC radio show and potential stories.
Decided to postpone the Barbara Dyskant interview on nuclear power till
6/25th, and schedule Sandra Athen's feature on the death penalty for
6/18. Omar volunteered to write headlines for the 6/11 show, most of which
was prerecorded by Paul Kotheimer.

Future stories include updates on opposition to the proposed dairy farm in
Bellflower and the proposed hog slaughter house in Rantoul. Mollie
suggested interviewing Don Rolla about both of those issues. I mentioned
interested trying to interview Ian Thomas, a US geological survey map
maker who was fired when he posted a map of caribou migration his
extensive and longstanding website.

Mollie and Sehvilla (?) plan to attend the Renewable Energy conference in
Wisconsin next week.

No action yet on Maria Silva et al story on migrant workers in Paxton.

There was also discussion of the idea of a midwest regional imc gathering,
about which there have been several posts to the imc list.

I observe that the imc shows go well when many people pitch in, even for a
small part. Sandra has put forward such a call for this Monday; Pauline
has made such a request for next Monday.

----
meeting 6/17/01

attending: John Wason, Omar Ricks, Mark Enslin, Avram Golden-Triste

John explains that he and Omar are now edtiors/facilitators of the print
publication working group and that he is attending the news group meeting
as a liason.

Omar and I give an over view of the kinds of news stories the news group
has been working on and the use of the news group meetings to report to
the group on stories covered and plan stories to be covered.

Avram asks whether there is a big list of stories to cover--this brings
up the suggestion aired early this year that the news group make a board
to track stories in progress and who is working on which.

Avram and Omar are interested in working with Maria on the Paxton workers
story she proposed--possibly for inclusion in the July 25 radio show; they
will call her.

In looking at the IMC radio news hour schedule, we note that July 9 is
listed as being produced by Danielle, but has no featured topic yet. John
says he would be willing to be interviewed about Study Circles; suggests
also interviewing Robin Barron of the YWCA on this.

Next IMC show features a 20 minute inteview of Barbara Dyskant, produced
by Pauline Bartolone.

next meeting: 6/24 1:15pm IMC
