This is certainly a project a lot of people have been interesting, thanks
for bringing it up, Lindsay.
The thing I want to note is that the main impediment to a project like this
right now is not so much money as it is time--specifically volunteer effort
and time. The current core group of IMC volunteers I think is pretty
tapped out, and so has no time or energy for another project. So while
there may be enthusiasm for doing a paper, I don't think there is the
actual time and energy for it--no matter how badly some of us want to see
it happen.
But I don't think this should discourage anyone or hold things back. What
it means is that folks who want to do this should use such a project as an
opportunity to bring new folks or folks who haven't been too involved into
it, and therefore the IMC. Obviously such a project would be cooperative
with the news group, but the news group's schedule shouldn't hold it back
(or, perhaps the news group just needs to change its schedule--attendance
has been awfully thin lately).
Fresh faces, fresh ideas and fresh energy are what's necessary to carry off
new projects in many cases. Perhaps I'm wrong--so someone please correct
me if I'm wrong--but I think that if this is something you'd like to see
happen, Lindsay, the IMC will need you to do some coordinating to get it
off the ground.
I'd recommend rounding up some interested people together for a
meeting--I'd especially recommend finding some people not already heavily
active at the IMC. See what ideas and realistic energy people have and try
to plan a course together. After you've had a couple of meetings and start
to have an idea of what is needed, approach the IMC steering group (Sundays
at noon) to keep them up to date, and perhaps request funds or whatever
else you need. You don't necessarily have to coordinate all of this. If
you gather the right people together all you'll have to do is put them in
one place and plant the idea.
Like so many projects, this is one I'd love to be a part of, but
realistically know I can't do. Even more honestly, because I'm already
full with commitments, if I tried to be a part I think I'd end up being
more of a hindrance than a help. I don't think I'm alone in this within
the core IMC crew -- that's why I stress trying to get some fresh faces
involved.
Again, thanks for coming forward and reminding us of the idea. I hope this
e-mail doesn't seem discouraging, because it's not meant to. Simply, I
want to try and give some constructive guidance based upon my 6 months of
experience with this young organization.
