News Focus Group
Sunday, March 18, 2001 at IMC; 1:15 pm.

Attending: Paul K., Zach, Mitra, Russ & Nancy, Mark

Works In Progress:
A team is working on follow-up stories for the School Climate Survey,
including Mark. He said they will be covering the history of the Climate
Survey, as well as what the Champaign School Board is doing with the
reccommendations of the survey.

It was mentioned that Sascha is working on Anti-Chief stuff.

Mitra is interested in covering agricultural/erosion stories. She is
focusing on a story about farmers taking out windbreaks from their
farmland because of relaxed laws, and how this is contributing to soil
erosion. Group thought this would be an interesting story to cover.

New story item: Dave Johnson reported that the Carpenters International
union is proposing to pull out of the AFL-CIO. This could cause major
ramifications for local Carpenter members. Sascha & Paul K., attended
the last Carpenters' local meeting concerning this, and are following up
on this story.

Other News:
Several people are interested in Lindsay Robinson's newsletter idea; but
no exact plans right now.

Discussion took place on how the IMC can get more involved in Girfest,
which will be the last weekend in April. Paul's idea is to get those
participating girls who are interested together for a workshop on what
reporters do, and then the girls will go out and report on the activities
they take part in. Nancy will be teaching a class on an unrelated
subject for Girlfest, can be one of the people teaching about reporting
(print media). Other mentors needed for photography, audio, etc.

Add to agenda for next week: discussion on self-evalation for reporting.

Meeting adjourned approx. 2:15 pm.
