hi Michael

speaking as a recording artist whose work gets played on the radio (AND as
an IMC NewsHour producer), here's my understanding of how it all works:

when you (the Producer of a Radio Broadcast) play a song on the radio
under Capitalism, the way you "REIMBURSE" the artist (i.e. copyright
holder) is to notate the ARTIST, SONG, and ALBUM, on the RADIO STATION'S
PLAYLIST.

on a yearly basis, as a matter of contract, radio stations reimburse
the "PERFORMERS' RIGHTS SOCIETY(s)" (i.e. ASCAP/BMI/etc.) and then the
"PERFORMERS' RIGHTS SOCIETY(s)" reimburse(s) the artists.

so, if i were the writer of the song in question, i would ask that if you
play one of MY songs on the IMC NewsHour, you please WRITE IT DOWN ON THE
WEFT PLAYLIST so that it gets logged in and tallied up (along with the
10,000 times that various Smashmouth songs have gotten played on WPGU) so
that [THEORETICALLY], in the end, i can get paid!!!

i presume that Utah Phillips would ask the same of you, regardless of the
overwhelming frequency-of-play that Smashmouth (or any other band's) songs
receive in the grand scheme of radio playlist rotation.

Will Utah Phillips ever get paid for the ONE measley time you play his
song on the NewsHour? --you may ask...

in the end, probably not. but now you know how to TRY to pay him for his
efforts.

love and music,
paulkotheimer:)
