* THE GENETIC CODE OF A CROP PLANT has been spelled out for the
first time. Two groups of scientists -- one academic, one
corporate -- have sequenced the genomes of two varieties of
rice, a primary food source for more than one-third of the
world's population. Scientists say the accomplishment will
benefit agriculture as well as research on other crop plants.
