More forest, less Bush
..

So read a protestor’s sign in Portland last week, where thousands
demonstrated against the president. Many of them were protesting Bush’s
so-called “Healthy Forests” initiative. Claiming that this initiative
will diminish the threat of damage from forest fires, Bush intends to
allow timber companies to “thin” forests—a process that often resembles
commercial logging.

Bush’s proposal would allow “thinning” across thousands of acres, many
of them far from human habitation. He proposes to compensate timber
companies by allowing them to also cut down large valuable trees on
public lands. Part of Bush’s proposal includes waiving the National
Environmental Policy Act, as well as other important environmental
laws.

It has been reported that many of Bush’s largest contributions in the
northwest come from the timber industry.
