This is a portable field recording device that records directly to MP3
format data. Might be useful for some field reporting. Getting the
audio from the recorder to the computer would be faster than
realtime. Putting uneditted MP3's on the web (say recordings of
performances or lectures) would be VERY fast. And if you did want to
edit you could uncompress to WAV, edit, and go from there.

Sure you have to deal with lossy MP3 compression but Minidisc is lossy too. 

Anyway thought this might be interesting for you folks to know
about. I haven't seen or used one, just saw a blurb on slashdot.
