FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR, BRETHREN MINISTER AMONG TEACHERS AT NEW SCHOOL FOR
SOCIAL JUSTICE
Teachers volunteer time to Heartland Peace Academy beginning in February
2004

   SPRINGFIELD, IL - January 25, 2004 – A dozen volunteers will teach over 100
students in eleven classes and five seminars at the Heartland Peace Academy, a
new school for social justice education, set to open its doors in February,
2004. Among the volunteer staff are Fulbright Scholar Proshanta Nandi, UIS
Professor of Sociology; Tavia Ervin, Minister, Church of the Brethren; and
Terri Jackson, UIS Director of Minority Leadership in Public Service.
The Peace Academy, sponsored by the Heartland Peace Center, began
registering students of all ages and backgrounds for the eight-hour Academy
classes in January.
Fighting racism, ending sweatshops, building democracy, slowing
environmental destruction and strengthening community will be among the issues
tackled in the Academy’s first semester. Graduates of the four-month semester
will take part in a Community Organizer Training in June and will be
encouraged to actively work for social justice in Springfield.
“The Peace Academy offers a unique opportunity to work with a small group
of people that choose to develop their skills in order to promote peace in the
world,” said Karin Cotterman, UIS Program Coordinator for Student Volunteers
and Service Learning and Academy co-teacher of From Passion to Action:
Communicating effectively, inclusively, and creatively. "As a teacher and
participant I find this work invigorating. It is important for like minded-
people to share ideas and inspiration in an environment that can be both
challenging and renewing.”
According to Academy Coordinator and UIS Capital Scholar Liz Moran, the
idea for the school came out of frustration with classmates felt they had
neither the education nor the skills to affect positive social change.
“Education helps build the confidence people need to speak out against
injustice. Graduates will finish the Academy with the skills and local
support they need to fight for issues they care about.”
