for Free Speech Radio News
a Daily, National Non-Commercial Radio News Show

Free Speech Radio News, the daily news magazine broadcasted across the
Pacifica network and its 50+ affiliate stations, seeks a motivated,
energetic reporter who's not afraid of deadlines or politicians.

Job description:

This position is responsible for the overall planning, production and
execution of the DC beat federal government stories on FSRN. Some local DC
stories will also be required. The DC reporter works closely with the
producers and host to create a timely, broadcast-quality news program every
day. The DC reporter is expected to attend a daily morning (9am) conference
call having prepared a list of story ideas for the newscast, with special
emphasis on the DC beat. This job could be split between two people,
enabling 2 part-time positions.

* Monitor the news daily to keep abreast of issues that need to be
covered
* Ensure that stories are accurate, fair, clear and complete
* Record, edit and deliver audio material by deadline
* Attend required daily staff meetings
* Support other FSRN programmers as needed
* Develop and coordinate DC reporter pool

Required skills:

Candidates must have proven organizational management skills, as well as
reporting, research, writing, producing, and digital sound editing abilities
of a high caliber. The successful candidate should have a good working
knowledge fair and accurate news-gathering, and be able to work under often
intense deadline pressure. Candidates should have a positive attitude and
the ability to creatively manage resources to fulfill the program's mission.
Must be able to work weekdays and some weekends. This position also
requires a strong awareness of news from a social justice perspective,
including a clear understanding of the Pacifica mission and a critical
approach to the government.

Preferred skills:

Strong candidates have demonstrated experience in radio news production,
particularly news magazine programs. Knowledge of Pacifica Radio Network,
progressive political movements, and experience working with multicultural
communities and environments also helpful.

Pay:

$500 retainer, additional pay according to how many stories produced per
week. Estimated pay $2420/month, assuming the production of three feature
stories per week. Additional stories may be required, garnering additional
compensation.

Number of hours per week: 40+ hours/week

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Work space is provided in the US Capitol building and at WPFW Radio in Adams
Morgan, DC.

Position start date: August 4, 2003

Position end date: August 1, 2004 (option to continue may be available at
that time)
