Hi radio,

The conference held on the 17th in the Champaign city council chambers was
a public display of the city of Champaign's goodwill toward "minority
communities." The presenters included: everyone who's important in the
police department led by chief RT Finney, the city manager (steve carter),
Tracy ___ president of the urban league (he was sorta the moderator of the
public comments), and a bunch of quiet folks from the NAACP and other city
offices. So the city got everyone they deemed important enough to sit up
on high and tell the people that Champaign cops aren't racist and don't
profile suspects. The public comment period had a fairly diverse crowd
that spoke mostly against what had been said by the police and their past
record. I have some literature that was handed out at the meeting with
more details, but alas I'm out of town for the next week or so. Here's
the press release for the forum:

The Police-Community Relations Committee of the City of Champaign invites
you to a Community Town Hall Forum on June 17th from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.
in the City of Champaign Council Chambers, 102 N. Neil Street. If you are
interested in learning about how minority community leaders and police
officials have been working together to address community concerns, plan to
attend this informational event. If you have any questions, please contact
Joan Walls at 403-6912 or by e-mail to
wallsja at ci.champaign.il.us

I'm sure if you wanted to contact Joan Walls, she'd be happy to do an
interview or give you more info. And I'm also pretty sure that since it
was a public forum, anything that was recorded is fair game for broadcast.

Thanks for doing it Dave!
