What kind of patchbay?  1/4" TRS?  Or would getting a good switcher be 
better (and more user friendly)?

2nd -- You need an optical cable with a mini-optical adaptor for the 
portable MD.  One actually should have come with the MD itself.  One can be 
bought for around $18 and we can put it on the Tech to-buy list if necessary.
