for those who are interested in alternatives to active, this is one of the
most promising pieces of software.

Sascha --

I'm currently getting some help from St. Louis and Michigan folks to
write an installer for the codebase, so I hope to make it available
soon. As for the question of "open code," it looks something like this:

I've written and maintained the codebase so far by myself. It's almost
100% object-oriented, and built upon a framework that allows for
additional functionality to be implemented using class objects developed
in similar fashion. The code "logic" is about 75% divorced from display
layout -- so it's pretty easy to modify the layout without having to
mess with the PHP stuff.

Nonetheless, I'm writing up some basic documentation explaining the
structure of the code, and the methodology of its functions. Once one is
familiar with the way it works, it's not too hard to add to or modify.

I'll maintain an "official" release of the codebase that, for the most
part, functions right out of the box. Anyone can download the code and
run the installer and have a functioning IMC system without needing to
muck around too much in PHP.

The code, however, is still free for the looking and the modifying, if
you know what you're doing. In that sense, it's "open". But I'm not
likely (in the near future) to open _development_ of future code
modifications for the official release. At least not in the sense of
starting a CVS tree and opening it the way Active has been. I'm going to
try to keep a relatively tight rein on the code of the official
release...

But, like I said, anybody that wants to modify the code is free to do
so, and eventually I assume some code will emerge that's worth rolling
into the codebase. I'm just wary of allowing the "Active syndrome" from
happening to this code...

I'm glad to hear you're interested, though. And at some point I'd like
to get together with some people who are familiar enough with Active
that they could help build a "converter" to import data from Active to
dadaIMC...

Cheers,
spud.
