My big harddrive (which houses all my web data) is slowly going
south. I think it's got a little more time in it but I've had a few
pretty scary crashes in the last couple weeks and the most recent one
led to minor data loss (nothing important). I want to replace it ASAP.
I'm going to replace the drive no matter what, should only cost me
about $100. But it occurred to me that I should ask whether or not the
IMC wants to chip in any funds for this. Specifically I was wondering
if the IMC would want to buy a RAID card and a few extra drives so
that we'd have a higher guarantee of data integrity. A RAID card would
mean that data was stored transparently across multiple drives with
redundancy so that if any drive failed no data would be lost.
This would cost about $450 (of which I'm already committed to spending
$100, so IMC would have to front $350) for the RAID card and a couple
disks.
I don't know if the IMC has budget for this or if there would be any
interest in fundraising for it. I just thought I'd suggest it. If
there isn't interest I'll just get the single replacement disk and go
from there. I do hope to implement a RAID solution sometime in the
future myself but I can't afford it now.
