·       written in perl(uses mod_perl for webserver integration+speed)
·       generates static pages via a background daemon (slashd), uses 
apache handlers to route people to the static article
·       has a fairly powerful admin/config interface
·       uses mysql, under a (mostly consistent) homebrewed db abstraction layer
·       supports media uploads, image galleries, topics, syndication(can 
both produce rss and display rss feeds in "slashboxes")
·       has a rating system tied to login+valid email address to prevent fraud
·       partially integrated with features.cgi for center-column maintenace
