[Imc-tech] helping the Indymedia Network:

Hi all,

Is there any interest in offering to help host some of the Global
Indymedia Network's "stuff" here locally? It sounds like our tech group
is probably one of the more advanced around and doing so would give it a
"reason to be"...

Anyone interested?

Subject: [Imc-communication] about spam on this list / sobre spam en esta lista

Summary: Lots of mail server problems. Spam guards won't be
back for at least a week.

Espa=F1ol mas adelante:

Sorry for not getting back to people. We've all been busy. Sarai, the =20=

indymedia mailinglist server's fan broke several months ago. While the =20=

fan got fixed, in the process some parts, we don't know which, =20
overheated and partially broke. This past week the problem got worse =20
and Sarai kept crashing. The techies in Philadelphia are good radicals =20=

and don't have cars. Unfortunately Sarai was housed in a data center =20
many miles out in to the suburbs. Every time server crashed, which was =20=

about every day, they would have to frantically call the few activists =20=

who did have cars and beg a ride. Sarai has been moved to a different =20=

facility in Philly which is accessible by bicycle and public =20
transportation. But that hasn't stopped it from crashing. We discovered =20=

that if we turned of spam assassin the server didn't crash nearly as =20
often. The decision was made that it was better to have mailinglists =20
with spam than NO mail or mailinglists at all.

That is why all the lists are getting so much spam, there is no spam =20
blocking on indymedia lists at the moment. It was this or a mail server =20=

that was not running at all most of the time, corrupting mailinglists =20=

and generally creating a bigger mess.

At an emergency imc-tech/sysadmin meeting today the decision was made =20=

to setup a completely new server and move the primary mail hosting to =20=

it. We're trading the SF imc geeks sarai for the fridge, which i =20
believe is going to be named che, although i'm not sure. The fridge is =20=

the size of a small minifridge. Because of this we're having a little =20=

trouble finding a place to host it. I expect it will take at least a =20
week before we can transfer all the mail operations over to che which =20=

will be probably find a home in San Francisco, Seattle, or New York.

At the same meeting we discussed extending the irc network to provide =20=

better reliablity.

Hopefully listwork, the working group which manages the mail server, =20
will be able to send a general announcement to all lists explaining the =20=

problem.

problemas =20

indymedia tambi=E9n.

in solidarity,
evan
