Someone uploaded some huge encrypted .zip files to our server and
we've been FLOODED with download attempts on these files for a couple
of days. The files seem to be named with the names of bollywood
artists (as far as I can tell from google) and they seem to be
encrypted zip's containing WMV files (but without the password I can't
verify).

I have moved all of these files from their original filename to the
same file name with -BAK so that people can't download them.

21618065 Apr 14 05:09 /var/www/ucimc/usermedia/application/1/Kathalukku_Mariyathai_-_Ennai_Thalata.zip-BAK*
29802372 Apr 14 14:54 /var/www/ucimc/usermedia/application/11/Vedham_-_Muthal_Poo.zip-BAK*
21618065 Apr 14 08:00 /var/www/ucimc/usermedia/application/2/Kathalukkv_Mariyathai_-_Ennai_Thalata.zip-BAK*
30704594 Apr 13 06:14 /var/www/ucimc/usermedia/application/4/Khakee_-__Dil_Dooba.zip-BAK*
49620960 Apr 12 08:18 /var/www/ucimc/usermedia/application/6/Jayam_-_Kavithaye_Theriyuma.zip-BAK*

I've also banned the IP addresses of several machines that were
clogging up our bandwidth trying to download these files. Since we
don't have IP tracking for the IMC website I can't track down everyone
that was trying to access these files, only the few people who were
actively accessing them when I happened to notice a slowdown and get
on and kill their connection.

The following hosts are currently blocked at the IP level:

cache3.nottingham.ac.uk
210-5-203-20.reverse.newskies.net
lns-vlq-26-82-255-155-250.adsl.proxad.net

All of these are overseas hosts: England, France, and India.

Paul,
Are those pics .jpg's? I know that the Chicago MayDay art party story
had a .jpg that did work.

On the other hand, I seem to recall that there seemed to be some issue
specifically with trying to post pics with Features in the past. I don't
recall whether it was with the Feature itself or with comments.

In any case, I know that uploading pics with this version of Dada has
been particularly problematic and frustrating for people since we
upgraded. It would sure be nice if this was resolved somehow.

One additional thought. Is this somehow related to turning off the Media
Gallery? I know we dislike having it for a number of reasons, but I
don't think we had this problem before it was disabled.

Imsahp does have both libgd1 1.8.4 and libgd2 2.0.1.
I guess PHP is too dumb to figure out which one to use.

Maybe I do. Below is the change I made. Please see if it fixes things.

Good luck!

This feels like deja vu. I think we did the exact same fix in a
previous version. Is that correct?

Today we were once again massively flooded with downloads of zip files
that have been newly uploaded to our ucimc server. I put a directive
into apache to block all requests for all files ending in .zip. There
are currently no non-encrypted legitimate .zip files on the ucimc.org
site so this doesn't really hurt anything.

People can still upload .zip's they just can't download them.

It'd be great if someone who knew dada and has admin access could go
in and disable the ability to upload .zip's.

This time around the file in question was:
14784090 Apr 15 16:57 /var/www/ucimc/usermedia/application/5/New(Bit_Songs).zip

I'd like to have two tech orientation trainings sometime in the next
month or so. At one we could train people on how our network and
workstations are configured at the UCIMC and at another we could train
people on how dada is configured and maintained. These would be an
outreach/training/recruitment tool like the Radio Group's trainings
have been.

Maybe we can even end up with a functioning tech group again if we get
some new blood.

Wendy has already expressed interest in this. Who else would be
interested?

What if we tried for May 8 and May 15 (both Saturdays).
