[Imc-tech] dada jamming up

Several times today I've had to restart apache because 20 or more
apache processes were stuck processing very simple dada requests
(usually views of the front page). These processes were eating up many
minutes of CPU time and churning away seemingly without end. The
requests were coming from perfectly valid client users (it isn't like
the "attacks" from poorly written chinese (and altavista) web search
engine spiders and the like that we've seen in the past). These
requests were just simple front page requests from the ucimc.org site
from various DSL and cable modem and UIUCnet and other users around
town.

Has anything been changed in dada recently that might account for
these request hangs gumming up the works?

It's something I've seen to a lesser extent before, it used to be that
every few weeks there might be a single rogue process like this that
needed to be killed. But this has been many processes multiple times
in one day.

Debian does not have apache or PHP upgrades in the queue and I
couldn't find any bugs filed for apache or PHP that are relevent to
this issue. I also haven't upgraded apache or PHP in a few weeks, and
this problem just started today.
