The Future of Community Media Centers: How Urbana Indymedia bought the post
office, raised a radio station, and bridged the digital
divide<http://agenda.freepress.net/?i=85>
Submitted by Danielle Chynoweth, Prometheus Radio Project and
Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center

This session proposes a future vision for community media centers, taking as
a case study the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center, founded in 2000,
which employs every form media (web, print, TV, radio, mobile) and cross
pollination between these to win real policy change in their community.
UCIMC founders will discuss how they acquired a 30,000 square foot post
office building in downtown and brought in 12 AmeriCorps members to support
its 1200 volunteers and dozens of media and arts programs. Key to their
growth will be the installation of high speed fiber through a $22 million
national broadband grant the Urbana IMC helped win for its community. The
UCIMC is a model for how radio stations, public access TV stations, and
community centers can grow and become sustainable.

ALSO, vote for workshop by Prometheus Radio Project on community news, low
power radio, and navigating the FCC and a host of other Media Justice
workshops here:
