[IMC-US-tech] imc-us mockup:

i am indeed that john. I've been working on www.indy for a while,
trying to move the syndication of local features into mir so it can
get fancier than just an epheremal newswire include, and to redo the
www.indy templates so a redesign could happen using css for all the
layout.

this work has proved pretty congruent to what imc-us needs, so i've
been sort trying to do as much as possible of this that benefits
imc-us first.

so far i've got:

1) mir code that, from edna(specifically the "sun" servlet which runs
the global newswire), talks to the contactdb on noam, fetches a list
of active imcs and their corresponding feeds, figures out which
feature feed has the most content and is the highest version of rss,
then goes ahead and grabs these feeds, pulling out the articles and
shoving them in the mir-db. along the way, it keeps track of the
region of each feed (supplied by the contact db), so it can at a later
point spit out rss 1.0 containg a feed of just the us features,
including content. this all seems to be working, although the feed is
not up to date, as i am currently pulling and pushing rss manually.
when i'm sure it won't bring down the server, i'll just put it in cron.

2) a startpage template that should work for imc-us as well as for
www.indy, where all layout is removed, leaving nice pure sematic
xhtml. (which means designers don't have to worry about freemarker
templates) the template is really modular, i'm going to try and whip
up some templates for the interior pages(articles, archives) tonight.
i will probably stick all these templates and such in cvs on
codecoop.org once it reaches an alpha state.

the plan:

plug these templates into a new mir instance somewhere. set up
imc-us-mir to pull in the feed that edna makes for it. this will be
really easy once the mir gets set up.

what i need:

multiple servers. at least one capable of running mir(java+postgres),
preferably debian, with some sort decent bandwidth(doesn't need to be
fantastic, as it will only be hit for publishing and searching. this
might be publish.ftaaimc.org, which has ample disk space and could
probably handle the load, but which needs some serious sysadmining
before it can be considered stable(a new kernel+cleaning up sloppy
apt-getting resulting in lots of mismatched packages). i don't think
i really have the time to do this, so using this machine would require
a volunteer to take a look at it.

the other servers would be static mirrors, ideally with large amounts
of disk space free and very good bandwidth. only necessary software
is apache and rsync.

what i will need:
the templates will certainly need to be
tweaked. (once there in cvs this should be easy to spread around)
presumably the plan is to have a multilingual site(english/spanish?),
so the language bundles will need to be dealt with.
