One solution to all this would be to let editors vote for articles,
and above a certain threshold the articles become features.  The
software is able to do this already, we just have it turned off.  It
democracizes feature-izing, and does so anonymously.  The only
downside is that you have to have a set of active editors that read
the site frequently.  The software attempts to take care of this by
allowing all editors to be notified when a something has been
submitted as a feature.

It also allows "dissent," which adds a consensus flavor to the voting:
if an article gets submitted as a feature, and rated highly enough, an
editor can block its promotion to feature by registering dissent, and
can later un-register dissent if his/her concern is satisfied.

This is perhaps something for everyone to discuss at the next web
meeting.
