As part of the Martin Luther King activities on campus, there will be a
day-long workshop on dealing with diversity in the classroom, led by
James Loewen. There are a number of speakers with impressive
qualifications coming in to town to work on this.

Vernon Burton, the organizer, would very much like to have this
videotaped for classroom use later on -- part of the day would be
possible if not the entire day.

Would anyone be interested?  Here's the basic info with a URL --


        On Saturday, Jan. 25, as the concluding event of MLK, JR. week,
we are
welcoming the community onto the UIUC campus for a workshop on
Diversity and Racism in the Classroom.  This workshop will feature Jim
Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me, as our keynote, and a group
of
Carnegie Scholars who have studied issues of race and diversity in the
university will present sessions.  So, if you know people who might be
interested, please spread the word.  This workshop is free and open to
the
public, but we require registration.  High school teachers can receive 6

hours of in-service credit for attending.  Workshops are also geared for

college faculty and graduate students.
        I hope that you will join us.  We can all gain from this
workshop.  The
workshop will discuss how to achieve diversity in the classroom as well
as
how to deal with problems of racism.  Check out the schedule, workshop
