[Imc-web] Non-Local (But Approriate) Feature

My only objection is that it's just the repub of a press release, not a
story, and further, not a local press release (I'd give more slack to a
press release by the CCHCC, ISEN or even the Champaign County
Republicans).

If it were rewritten, even summarized, I'd have less objection.

Ideally, the content of this report could be woven into at least a
summary, or critique, of events happening locally.

To bring even more local relevance, it would be relatively easy to pull
some census statistics about racial equality in Champaign-Urbana.
www.census.gov is a treasure trove of data and is remarkably easy to
navigate.

I'll always be critical of putting up reposts of press releases or
larger press stories under the rationale that "it's important and
there's nothing else posted to the site." I think summarizing, rewriting
and localizing are fine strategies and don't require much time.

Subject: [Imc-web] Non-Local (But Approriate) Feature

I want to make an otherwise non-local story into a feature. Here's a
link to the background:
http://ufenet.org/0115/

This is something that is getting little notice, but is very
significant. Here's some reasons I am making it a feature:

It is a story about the usually undiscussed-these-days results of
continuing racism in our society.
It's MLK Day weekend, but AFAIK, we have no local story planned.
It'll get picked up by Global IMC and, with the lack of a Global
Newswire, this is an approriate venue for it.

If anyone has any objections, I will move it back to Elsewhere, but I
hope my take on this story is shared by others.
Mike Lehman
