in IE the "search this site" bar was pushing the column to roughly 121px
(instead of the template's 117).  because mozilla (and other browsers)
render the text smaller (and with less cell padding), they were correctly
rendering the page.  once i figured out the problem, i simply edited the
search box in the php code so that it now reads "search" -- and voila(!)
everything now renders correctly.
