This is a reminder to the RFU, Print, Web, and Production groups that the
IMC is coordination a free online news/investigation training seminar (or
"webinar") with Bill Allison of the Sunlight Foundation. If you are
interested, please respond to this announcement so that you can receive an
e-mail invitation to attend. Invitations will include a link to click on at
2pm on 9/2 and a phone number to dial in order to hear the lecture and join
the discussion (if you don't have a computer mic or speakers). You can
attend from your own computer, as long as you have an Internet connection.
A group of us will also be meeting in the IMC Production Room to join the
web conference.

The purpose of the training session is to offer advice and tools on
independent journalism, with a focus on local and congressional
investigation. As many of you might be aware, the Public i, WRFU, Web, and
Production are in the beginning stages of collaborative news and media
projects - short-form weekly video news highlighting local events and
topics, development of a radio news team, and continually updated content to
the IMC web site.

Here is more description of the webinar from the Sunlight Foundation:

Bill Allison, a longtime money-in-politics investigator based at
theSunlightFoundation, is offering free webinars to local public radio
newsrooms
interested in using the (very cool) tools Sunlight has developed recently.
In case you're unfamiliar, Sunlight has been digitizing all sorts of public
records and making them readily available on the web. They range from
campaign contributions to personal financial disclosures to earmarks. All
made easy for local reporters on deadline or those with time to dig dirt.

How the webinars work is Bill will spend an hour on the phone with your
staff showing you the latest online watchdogging tools and data for finding
information on the members of Congress you cover. You can ask questions and
he will leave you with two or three story ideas you can pursue. All free,
entirely fact-based, and focused on your reps.
