I was a guest on the presidential debates. They were a glitzy affair,
with entertainers doing comedy skits most of the time and just a
little time for actual debating. Simon and Garfunkel were one comedy
team; they had been dressed up as Siamese twins and were canvassing
the city asking people questions and telling off-color jokes. Bill
Clinton's father endorsed Gore from the window of a small jet,
instructing the crowd over the din of the engines to vote for the more
liberal candidate. He was bald and erudite, and didn't look a day
over 60.
